Jig and fixture design and build considerations

We recommend applying the 3-2-1 principle to accurately secure workpieces in three-dimensional space. This foundational rule governs all nine degrees of freedom by using three pins on the primary surface, two on the secondary surface, and one on the tertiary surface. Proper application ensures the workpiece is consistently and repeatably positioned for every operation.

Select suitable materials based on strength, wear resistance, and ergonomics. Common choices include hardened steel for high-wear components and aluminium alloys for lighter, more manageable tools. The material must withstand process forces without failing while remaining practical for the operator to handle.

Incorporate modularity for flexibility and quick reconfiguration. Modular fixtures built from standardized components allow manufacturers to adapt tooling for different part runs without building entirely new fixtures. This approach reduces lead times and lowers overall tooling costs for varying production volumes.

It’s essential to ensure ergonomics, for example, by reducing weight and ensuring safe, easy handling. Heavy or poorly balanced fixtures contribute to operator fatigue and increase the risk of injury. Features such as built-in handles, lightweight materials, and one-handed clamps improve both safety and productivity.
