Custom Jig & Fixture Design & Build Malaysia

Jigs and fixtures are fundamental manufacturing tools that boost production speed, accuracy, and repeatability. Jigs are custom devices that guide cutting or drilling tools to precisely position features, such as holes or slots. For example, drill jigs used in the automotive industry accurately locate holes in metal components.

Fixtures, conversely, secure workpieces without guiding the tool. The devices are widely employed in CNC machining to stabilize parts during milling or turning, and in assembly lines to maintain alignment and fit across multiple production stages. Advanced fixtures in automotive manufacturing, for instance, position components precisely, reducing errors and minimizing manual adjustments.

At WALD, we use innovative methods and machinery to design custom jigs and fixtures. We are customer-centric and know the importance of getting it right the first time. We work closely with clients to deliver custom jig and fixture solutions that fit their needs.

Jig and fixture design and build considerations

We recommend applying the 3-2-1 principle to accurately secure workpieces in three-dimensional space. This foundational rule governs all nine degrees of freedom by using three pins on the primary surface, two on the secondary surface, and one on the tertiary surface. Proper application ensures the workpiece is consistently and repeatably positioned for every operation.

Select suitable materials based on strength, wear resistance, and ergonomics. Common choices include hardened steel for high-wear components and aluminium alloys for lighter, more manageable tools. The material must withstand process forces without failing while remaining practical for the operator to handle.

Incorporate modularity for flexibility and quick reconfiguration. Modular fixtures built from standardized components allow manufacturers to adapt tooling for different part runs without building entirely new fixtures. This approach reduces lead times and lowers overall tooling costs for varying production volumes.

It’s essential to ensure ergonomics, for example, by reducing weight and ensuring safe, easy handling. Heavy or poorly balanced fixtures contribute to operator fatigue and increase the risk of injury. Features such as built-in handles, lightweight materials, and one-handed clamps improve both safety and productivity.

WALD prefers simple jig and fixture designs. Our tools are easy to use with little training. Clients benefit from easy setup and maintenance, boosting operational efficiency.

We carefully consider the tolerance needed to ensure precision and stability. It’s worth mentioning that the fixture’s accuracy affects the final part. Too much clearance or weak rigidity leads to scrap and rework. Designers must factor in machining forces, thermal expansion, and wear to keep tight tolerances.

Jig and fixture maintenance

Long-term performance and durability of jigs and fixtures require more than just good design. The WALD team prefers a comprehensive approach to deployment and maintenance to ensure the ultimate ROI. Regular inspection promotes continuous improvement, while preventive maintenance averts downtime.

WALD recommends a full maintenance plan. We advise our clients to schedule preventive care, inspect wear points, plan component replacement, track performance, and document improvements thoroughly.

Our jigs and fixtures are made for easy maintenance. During design and build, we add features for quick cleaning, inspection, and part replacement. We aim to help clients cut downtime and keep operations running smoothly.
